Own Your Mornings
Most people don’t start their day—they just survive it. They wake up on autopilot, rushing through chaos, wondering why life feels overwhelming. But what if just 10 intentional minutes could change everything?
In this post, I’ll share five simple, science-backed shifts that can rewire your brain, reset your focus, and change the trajectory of your day—without adding stress or a complicated 10-step routine. If you want mornings that set you up for success, keep reading—this is for you.
Why Your Mornings Matters
Your morning sets the tone for your entire day. If you start your day trying to be everything for everyone—kids, partner, work—you already feel behind, out of control, and with zero time for yourself.
I know this because I’ve been there. For years, my mornings were a complete mess. Kids needing me, to-dos piling up, and me feeling like I was already behind before I even brushed my teeth. I thought the solution was waking up earlier, but that only made me more exhausted.
On top of that, I had this habit of grabbing my phone the second I woke up—scrolling through messages, news, and social media before I even got out of bed. It seemed harmless, but it ultimately left me feeling stressed all day.
Everything changed when I started giving myself just 10 minutes before letting the world in. Ten minutes to breathe, hydrate, and move my body. That tiny shift made me calmer and more focused; honestly, my family noticed the difference too. So, if mornings feel chaotic for you, know that I’ve been there—and these small changes really do make a significant impact.
The Common Mistakes Most Women Make
A common mistake women make is setting the alarm clock too early. You might think that waking up earlier would solve your morning rush, but here’s the truth—if you’re cutting sleep, you’re making things worse.
Research from the Sleep Foundation shows that losing just 30 minutes of sleep can impair decision-making and increase hormone irregularity by 40%. And if you’re a woman in your 40s, maintaining hormonal balance is key to feeling your best.
Instead of sacrificing sleep, ask yourself:
What’s the first thing that drains your energy after you wake up?
Is it checking your phone before you even sit up? Or jumping out of bed and rushing straight into chaos? That’s where you need to start making small changes.
5 Simple Shifts to Transform Your Morning
Your morning routine doesn’t need to be complicated. You only need a few simple steps:
- Delay Your Phone for 10 Minutes
Checking your phone first thing hijacks your brain. Studies show it can reduce focus for the entire day by up to 40%. Instead, give yourself a 10-minute buffer. Use that time to stretch, breathe, or write in a journal.
- Hydrate Before Coffee
After 8 hours of sleep, your brain is dehydrated. Even mild dehydration (just 1–2%) can cause fatigue and brain fog. So, drink a glass of water before reaching for coffee.
(At the wellness retreats I host for women, we start mornings with herbal tea instead of coffee. It’s a calm, intentional moment—no multitasking, no rushing. Just you and your tea.)
- Move for 90 Seconds
When you wake up, cortisol spikes—that’s normal. But if you don’t manage it, stress can spiral. A quick 90-second reset—stretch, walk, or do a few simple movements—can regulate your nervous system and boost alertness.
- Use Your First 20 Minutes Wisely
Your brain is in an alpha-beta state for the first 20 minutes of the day—highly programmable. What you focus on matters. Start with a positive affirmation or gratitude instead of negative news. This simple shift can set the tone for your entire day.
- Be Prepared
Make your mornings calmer by prepping one thing the night before. Lay out your clothes, prepare breakfast, or pack lunch. This tiny step reduces decision fatigue and makes mornings feel less rushed.
